Welcome to la kagu. ‘kagu’ means furniture in Japanese – and the name seems to derive from the fact that a lot of French people live in this area and find it difficult to pronounce Kagurazaka – so they settle with la kagu. I live close by, and I am not French, but I too struggle with the pronunciation.
You enter la kagu up wooden steps which filter out to the corner of the street – it’s a welcoming entrance – designed by the lover of wood Kengo Kuma. la kagu is a massive warehouse home to fashion, books, furniture and lifestyle goods and of course the reason why we are here – good coffee.
Takashi Horiuchi of Café Vivement Dimanche (Kamakura) has made an original blend for la kagu – and we hear he might be popping in every now and then for a special “hand-drip-day”. We will update our page when we know more. Oh, and if there was a prize for the best designed take away coffee cup…..
