“Nem” comes from the“Nemunoki” (Silk tree), which opens at sun rise and closes at sunset. Like the tree, the owners Takumi (previously Saturday’s Surf) and his wife Akiyo (previously Nozy Coffee) open Nem at 8am and close at 6pm.
It’s in Hiroo, which has been desperately in need of an independent coffee shop. After visiting Nem, one can only say that it’s been well worth the wait.
The house itself was built 50 years ago, and the first floor has now been transformed to Nem; a coffee shop serving up beans from Nakamura Roasters (Niigata) and Nozy Coffee (Tokyo). You have a choice of espresso based drinks or pour over, herbal tea and Prana Chai from Melbourne.
The atmosphere embodies a special spirit. The breeze flows through Nem, and it’s filled with natural light. It’s has a rustic Mediterranean feel to it, a style that is often sought after in Japan, but is rarely executed in such good fashion. Congratulations on the beautiful shop.
