A lot of people have a hard time with Tokyo summer! So, we’ve put together a list of EIGHT different iced coffee beverages at some of Tokyo’s best coffee shops to help you (and us!) make it through.
NITRO BREW at VERVE COFFEE ROASTERS, Shinjuku
Available all year round, but especially popular in the summer, Verve’s Nitro Brew infused with nitrogen gas out of the tap is super smooth and silky. Your barista prepares the brew 24 hours in advance using the streetlevel blend – expect hints of stonefruit, marmalade and maple syrup. And if you’re killing time, and need more coffee, then refills are available for only 300yen!
ESPRESSO TONIC at SWITCH COFFEE, Yoyogi Hachiman
Your barista fills your glass with ice, pours Schweppes tonic water until three quarters full, and then pulls a shot of espresso (50% Montesion El Salvador, 50% Passeio P/N Brazil) to complete this adult like beverage. The color layered transformation when the espresso is hits the tonic is really beautiful to watch. Switch’s E+T is refreshingly zesty and a great match for a hot summer day.
CHILTER (Cold Filter!) at SINGLE O, Ryogoku
If you’re after a cold filter recipe that ensures to really highlight the flavors of your bean, then we’d recommend starting with the Single O one. Ready?
Begin with 15g of your favorite ground coffee and multiple 15g by 11 for the amount of water to use (165ml). Divide that amount by 3 for the amount of ice to place in your server to start with (in this case 55grams of ice). 3 pours; first pour to 30grams (stir and wait 30 seconds), next pour to 90 grams, and when you hit the minute mark, pour the remaining water to reach 165 grams. Stir coffee in server to make sure all the ice has dissolved, which should bring the temperature of your coffee down to about 20 degrees, the right temperature so that when it hits the ice in your glass – the ice won’t melt so quickly… allowing you to enjoy the real flavor of your chosen coffee!
ROCK ICE COFFEE + MILK at ARTLESS, Nakameguro
Cold brew, using an original blend by Maruyama Coffee, is frozen in cubes and served with milk in one of Tokyo’s most beautiful coffee spaces. If you have time, let the coffee cube melt, and feel the taste intensity change. During this time, you can also check out the art exhibition sharing the space. The current exhibition by nailist @hana4 (check out her instagram!) is running until August 5, and is usually by appointment only… BUT! If you mention that you’re a Good Coffee fan, you’ll be able to gain special admission. Good things happen over good coffee!
STREAMER VOLCANO at STREAMER COFFEE COMPANY, Shibuya
Streamer Coffee’s summer beverage available from July 1 consists of a scoop of Vanilla Ice-cream on ice cubes, a shot of espresso poured over, filled up to the top with Coca-cola. Super instagrammable, get ready to watch the volcano erupt before your very eyes… and make sure you have some napkins ready! You’ll get a double caffeine hit, but the Streamer crew have been able to produce a good balance of bitter and sweet, making it a super refreshing beverage to treat yourself!
AFFOGATO at CAFE KITSUNE, Minami Aoyama
Not officially on the menu, but available for those in the know, Cafe Kitsune’s Affogato is a great choice during the summer days. The sweet vanilla icecream, topped with the shot of hot espresso, sprinkled with tiny coffee grounds is your new go-to dessert-beverage.
COLD BREW at ONIBUS COFFEE, Nakameguro
For a delicious Honduras cold brew, head to the back streets of Nakameguro to the well respected Onibus Coffee. Expect your brew tasting bright and sweet with hints of red apple, prune and dark chocolate. You’ll love having coffee time on the terrace chatting with the baristas through the window, watching the roaster in action, all the while amongst the green… a rare setting for a cafe in Tokyo!
MID SUMMER & CASCARA PINEAPPLE at BLUE BOTTLE COFFEE, Nakameguro
Leading up to summer, Blue Bottle Japan held an in-house competition where they challenged their staff – baristas and office workers – to come up with a summer drink which was “delicious”, “innovative” and “refreshing”. Recipes were created and sent off to America, to be made and tasted by Founder James Freeman… and two have been chosen and are available to purchase over the summer. One drink titled “MID SUMMER”, by Rie Suzuki, consists of Elderflower Syrup with cold brew, sparkling water and fresh lime, a drink as attractive as it is refreshing. The 2nd drink, by Tomohiko Sasayama, is named CASCARA PINEAPPLE – a combination of pineapple juice and casacara; a drink to discover the taste of coffee cherries!
We, the Good Coffee team, were lucky to meet both baristas and try their drinks! Thumbs up from us!
